Dasha System

The Vimshottari Dasha system is the heartpiece of Vedic predictive astrology — a 120-year planetary timing cycle that tells you which planet is 'in charge' of any given period of your life and what events, themes, and moods that planet will bring. This module walks through every planet's Mahadasha: what to expect career-wise, financially, in relationships, for health, and spiritually — along with favourable sub-periods, challenging sub-periods, and practical remedies. All content uses Aries (Mesha) Lagna as the reference chart to keep the illustrations concrete; your own Dasha effects depend on your Lagna.

Introduction to Vimshottari Dasha

Vimshottari means 120 — the total years of one complete Dasha cycle. This system answers the question every Vedic astrology student asks: when will the events shown in the birth chart actually happen?

Your birth chart shows the what. The Vimshottari Dasha system shows the when.

The 120-Year Cycle — All 9 Mahadashas

#PlanetDurationNakshatra that starts it
1Ketu7 yearsAshwini, Magha, Mula
2Venus20 yearsBharani, Purva Phalguni, Purva Ashadha
3Sun6 yearsKrittika, Uttara Phalguni, Uttara Ashadha
4Moon10 yearsRohini, Hasta, Shravana
5Mars7 yearsMrigashira, Chitra, Dhanishtha
6Rahu18 yearsArdra, Swati, Shatabhisha
7Jupiter16 yearsPunarvasu, Vishakha, Purva Bhadrapada
8Saturn19 yearsPushya, Anuradha, Uttara Bhadrapada
9Mercury17 yearsAshlesha, Jyeshtha, Revati

Your starting Dasha is determined by the Nakshatra the Moon occupied at the moment of your birth — and the fraction of that Dasha already elapsed at birth.

How Antardashas Work — Two Layers of Timing

Each Mahadasha is divided into 9 Antardashas (sub-periods), one per planet, following the same Vimshottari sequence starting from the Mahadasha lord:

  • Example: During Jupiter Mahadasha (16 yrs), the Antardashas run: Jupiter–Jupiter → Jupiter–Saturn → Jupiter–Mercury → ... → Jupiter–Ketu
  • Each Antardasha lasts a proportional fraction of the 16 years
  • The Mahadasha lord sets the overall tone; the Antardasha lord determines the specific flavour of each sub-period

Further subdivisions exist (Pratyantar Dasha, Sookshma Dasha) but are used only for pinpointing specific event timing — not needed for foundational reading.

How to Use These Lessons

All Mahadasha lessons in this module use Aries (Mesha) Lagna as the reference chart — because Aries Lagna aligns the natural zodiac with house numbers, making lordship effects easiest to illustrate.

  • The General Theme section of each lesson applies across all Lagnas
  • The Career, Finance, Health, Relationships sections are specific to Mesha Lagna — adjust for your own Lagna by rechecking which houses that planet rules
  • Remedies are universal and apply regardless of Lagna

To find your current Dasha: open your chart in any Vedic astrology app (JHora or Astro Mitra are free) and look for the Dasha table. Note your Mahadasha planet and the current Antardasha planet — those two together define your timing layer.
